SCC wins $42m laboratory information system replacement for PathWest

US firm SCC Soft Computer has won a $42 million contract to replace the aged Ultra laboratory information system (LIS) used by WA's public pathology service PathWest.

The highly competitive tender, which closed in March last year, saw 17 submissions for the contract, although the outcome was unexpected as SCC does not have a customer in Australia for its SoftLab LIS suite. However, it is understood that it does have some small installations for its anatomical pathology system SoftPathDx.

Seems like a "courageous" decision (as per the Yes, Minister definition) given the well-documented issues in systems implementation at the Fiona Stanley Hospital and (to the east) implementation of a US-based system for SA Health including for the new Royal Adelaide Hospital. It will be interesting to observe how SCC SoftLab and WA Health deal with the challenges of the Medicare billing rules.
