Sleep consultation in the palm of your hand
Two maternal and child health nurses have launched a new app to assist families with infant and toddler sleep issues.
The RockaBub app includes 71 video clips and an understanding your baby and toddler section in each age bracket, as well as a step-by-step guide to strategies.
Developed by Cindy Davenport and Helen Stevens of Safe Sleep Space, which provides home visits to parents in Melbourne as well as a day-stay program, the app is based on the information from the Safe Sleep Space book and DVDs, which provided parents with information, education and actual steps to settling.
The clinicians do not use controlled crying and instead have developed an approach that provides strategies to help babies through the adjustment to healthy sleep patterns that are appropriate to their developing brains.
“Parents liken it to a 'consultation in the palm of their hand',” Ms Davenport said. She said the Safe Sleep Space approach was recommended by health professionals around Australia, including GPs, paediatricians, midwives and child health nurses.
The app is free but comes with four “bundles” according to the child's age. Each bundle costs $2.99 or $9.99 for all four.
The bundles cover zero to four months, four to eight months, eight to 12 months, one to three years in a cot and in a bed. It includes videos of settling for each section, photos for each section and a step-by-step guide.
It is available for iOS devices from the App Store and an Android version will be available in early 2014 .
