Australian Hearing first to sign on for instant eReferrals with SmartForms

Australian Hearing has signed on as the first healthcare provider in Australia to use HealthLink's new SmartForms solution, which will allow GPs and other health professionals to make an instant electronic referral to one of its 450 services around the country.

HealthLink is rolling out SmartForms to its 11,500-site network in Australia. Almost all of the major practice management systems used in Australia and New Zealand have implemented the technology or are in the process of doing so.

The Australian Hearing forms are now available in the most recent releases of MedicalDirector and Genie.

The SmartForms technology can be pre-populated with the patient's data, sent securely at the press of a button and a copy saved as part of the medical record. The referrer also receives an electronic acknowledgement of receipt.

Australian Hearing is a government-owned statutory authority and is Australia's leading hearing specialist and largest provider of government-funded hearing services. Subsidised hearing care is available for children and young adults, pensioners and most veterans.

“The easier it is for people to get the help they need, the better,” Australian Hearing's operations director, Gina Mavrias, said. “Working with GPs in this way streamlines the referral process.”

HealthLink plans to add more SmartForms in the coming months, with the technology suitable for a wide array of forms used by government and non-government organisations, Medicare, insurance companies, hospitals, specialists and allied health practitioners.

In New Zealand, it has been implemented by Work and Income NZ to allow GPs to electronically send medical certificates for work capacity purposes. Eight months after going live, 72 per cent of all medical certificates for WINZ clients are being lodged through the service.

It has been built using the Aduro interface specification, a standards-based framework for the exchange of information on a large scale.

HealthLink, best known for its secure messaging service in Australia, has also reported an increase of 13.5 per cent in messaging volumes in 2015. Message volumes have grown slightly faster in Australia, the company says, but New Zealand remains its largest market.

In 2015, it sent 93 million messages, compared to 82 million messages in 2014. It now has 2116 New Zealand sites and 11,515 in Australia.

HealthLink's SmartForms have been used in New Zealand for over five years for hospital eReferrals, specialist and allied health eReferrals, health insurance forms and pathology and radiology service requesting.

In November 2015, general practices sent 170,000 SmartForms in New Zealand.
