Death knell for faxes: RACGP calls for electronic-only within three years

The Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) wants all healthcare services and government agencies that communicate patient information with general practices to do so by secure electronic means within the next three years, calling for the final chapter to be closed on the era of the letter and the fax machine.

The RACGP has released a position statement on the use of secure electronic communication within healthcare, calling for it to be the “preferred and default” method of communication for all health services and government agencies communicating with general practice about patients.

Someone might like to point the muppets in charge of the new My Aged Care website in the right direction. The manual web form that is required to be used for all referrals is completely ridiculous. I spent an hour trying to explain to someone on the end of the phone that our GPs are spending about 15 minutes copying information from our PMS into the web form. She could not comprehend how that is problematic. How this has been allowed to be implemented is totally beyond me.

The RACGP has been at them about this state of affairs so they are well aware that it's a problem. At the last industry briefing, people from the department said GPs should ring the call centre or fax a referral instead. Not really good enough, is it.

It's just a shame that HealthDirect won't share the address book on reasonable terms with the private hospital sector.
