HISA prepares for 18th Health Informatics Conference

The Health Informatics Society of Australia (HISA) is preparing for the peak group’s Health Informatics Conference 2010 (HIC2010), which will commence on Tuesday, August 24, at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre.

With a theme of ”Informing the business of healthcare”, the conference has attracted an impressive contingent of local and international keynote speakers, including Dr Mark Britnell (UK), Prof Michael Georgeff (Australia), Prof Trish Greenhalgh (UK), A/Prof Ross Lazarus (USA), Dr Donald Mon (USA), Dr Paul Tang (USA), Fran Thorn (Australia), John Thorp (Canada) and Prof Michael Ward (Australia).

Held in association with the HIC2010 conference proper are several Health Informatics and Health IT-related conferences dealing with nursing, aged care and hospital design.

The conjoined events program commences on Monday, August 23, with a pair of concurrently held events, namely the Nursing Informatics Australia Conference and the Inaugural Digital Hospital Design Conference and Workshop.

The formal opening of the HIC2010 conference will be directly preceded by a series of 12 health informatics workshops and tutorials. To be held alongside these sessions, an Aged Care Informatics Symposium will be convened with the event theme: “Advancing Informatics Research and Practice to Support Aged Care in Australia and the Region”.

Following an introductory address by conference chair David Rowlands, ABC television presenter Tony Jones will host a Health Informatics Q&A session, which is open to all conference delegates including purchasers of the “Health Informatics Taster Registration” option, which provides access to a range of proceedings on Tuesday, August 24. The organisers have pitched this registration at people that are new to the field of Health Informatics, and also at those that are unable to attend the entire conference.

Following the Q&A session, the HIC2010 Exhibition — which the organisers are flagging as the largest in the event’s 18 year history — will be opened.

For the sixth consecutive year, an Interoperability Showcase will be held as part of the HISA event. To be positioned in the exhibition hall, the Showcase will allow vendors to demonstrate the interoperability capabilities of their products to conference attendees. IHE Australia has increasingly gained attention in recent months on account of its work with the conformance testing of the Secure Message Delivery specification, which will be on display at the event. Against the backdrop of the recently announced national program for patient controlled health records, the Showcase will also focus on the capacity of the IHE Cross Enterprise Document Share (XDS) and Imaging (XDS-I) profiles to be positioned as a standards-based foundation for this initiative.

An invitational E-health Roundtable will be held on the morning of Friday, August 27, with the busy week of academic and industry proceedings complemented by an array of social and networking engagements. Among these are the Networking Reception and Official Exhibition Hall opening (Tuesday, August 24), the HISA AGM Breakfast (Wednesday, August 25), and the HIC2010 Gala Dinner (Wednesday, August 25).
