Paul Cooper acts in Saunders' place at DHHS

Respected business and IT strategy consultant and HISA member Paul Cooper has been named as acting director of digital health following the unexpected departure of Victorian Department of Health and Human Services' health sector CIO Andrew Saunders last week.

Dr Cooper, who has a PhD in science from the University of Melbourne through the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research (WEHI) and is an honorary associate professor at Deakin University, is also a Certified Health Informatician Australasia (CHIA).

DHHS is set to undertake a search for a permanent replacement for Mr Saunders, who told digital health staff in a recent email that the state had achieved significant progress over the last two years in developing the Digitising Health strategy for public health services.

Mr Saunders said Victoria now had a collaborative group of health service CIOs and a much closer relationship with other jurisdictions and the National Digital Health Agency, adopting more of their common systems and approaches.

Dr Cooper runs his own consulting firm and has advised on South Australia's strategic eHealth plan and on the National Authentication Services for Health (NASH) program for NeHTA.
